Programs in Taulo

The work here, as in Nandolo further to the south, is managed by Newton Sindo, the Canada – Malawi Liaison Development Officer.

The local government, through the District Executive Committee, asked FVM to assist in developing relevant programs in Early Childhood Development as identified by the people of 23 villages in Taulo , half an hour’s drives south of Zomba, the old colonial capital of Malawi.

These initiatives are managed entirely by the local people under Newton Sindo’s guidance along with the local chiefs and leaders.

  • Feeding program for 400 children daily with Likuni Phala, a locally produced protein fortified maize meal.
  • Completion of a multi –purpose nursery school and community resource centre in 2012 to enhance pre–school education and provide space for community meetings and counseling.
  • Two wells ( boreholes) have been completed in the area bringing clean water for the first time.
  • Weekly Bible Studies and counseling sessions are conducted under the leadership of Newton Sindo and Justin Falinya.
  •  A community garden is thriving to reduce the cost of purchasing food for the children
  • Visits have been facilitated for a number of interested partners from North America including the BYOBike team in 2012.
  • We are actively pursuing ongoing liaison with two hospitals in Zomba and Blantyre along with medical and optometry teaching centres in Canada to expand health care through local personnel.
  • The educational assistance fund is expanding yearly to enable students to gain secondary and post secondary education.
  • It is extremely exciting to see the life – changing effect of the message of God’s love as demonstrated through Jesus. Many lives have been changed in this area where life is hard and Chibuku ( the locally brewed beer)  often provides the only outlet for a sense of hopelessness.  The love and grace of Jesus give hope for eternity AND for now.
  • NEW INITIATIVE . We are excited that Dr Kalua from Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital ( Lions Sight First Eye Hospital) is taking the lead in a multi –partner program which will enable comprehensive, no cost eyecare to be delivered to every person in the 23 villages comprising Taulo. This is a joint effort of several international Lions Clubs ( Italy, Switzerland, Netherlands and USA), the Blantyre Institute of Community Ophthalmology ( BICO ), Future Vision Ministries and Essilor ( a well know international optical company). Screenings will be conducted on everyone at the  FVM Taulo site and those who require follow –up will receive glasses and /or surgery as needed.

Further initiatives will only be considered as they are proposed by local Malawian leadership and funds are available.

We especially thank Newton and Idah Sindo, Chief Taulo, the additional 23 village chiefs George Lumwira and our dedicated volunteers – Chrissy, Adolla, Richard and Edwin.
