  • Established in 1891, the British protectorate of Nyasaland became the independent nation of Malawi in 1964
  • Located in Southern Africa, it is bordered by Mozambique, Tanzani, and Zambia
  • Its capital is Lilongwe, but its largest city is Blantyre
  • With a population of over 19,000,000, it is home to various ethnic group and languages (its official language is Chichewa which is spoken by 57% of the population)
  • Malawi is one of the world's most densely populated and least developed countries
  • Median age of 17.3
  • The economy depends on substantial inflows of economic assistance
  • Major industries are tobacco, tea and sugar
  • GDP per capita is $900
  • 920,000 people living with HIV/AIDS
