FLASH FLOODING BRINGS DEATH AND DEVASTATION TO MALAWI

Continuous rainfall from March 4 -8 caused massive flooding in Taulo, the area where FVM has been working for 10 years. A total of 29,892 houses have collapsed and 3,255 families are sheltering in evacuation centres including FVM’s Chinangwa Nursery School in Taulo where more than 40 people have found shelter. FVM has begun distributing Likuni Phala (protein fortified maize meal) and other basic necessities to those in the evacuation centres.

Four people have lost their lives including 4 & 5 month old babies. (Further to the devastation from the heavy rains early in the month, tropical cyclone Idai also struck the coast of Africa on Thursday, March 14, and brought further destruction and a death toll of 56 lives in Malawi).  Thousands have lost everything including not only their homes but livestock, crops, bedding and cooking utensils.  The President of Malawi has declared a national state of disaster.

Among those affected are Chief Taulo (head over the 23 villages with whom we work and a longtimefriend of FVM) whose home was partially destroyed and Edwin Witness, a faithful volunteer with our nursery school for many years who also lost his home (see picture at the top).

FVM is partnering with a number of other organizations to bring relief to those impacted.
