September Malawi Update

The period between mid-July and mid-August 2020 was busy with community visits to gain perspective of the quality of life the rural masses are living amidst the threat of COVID-19 and recovery from political disturbance since last year. It has been pleasing to note that people still can enjoy living together and share their joys and sorrows. There is an increasing prevalence of COVID-19, but almost equal rate of recoveries and less deaths. This means prevention interventions should be increased.

No one has died of COVID-19 in the Taulo and Nandolo areas where FVM-C works. This can be attributed to awareness campaigns asking people to limit their travel from one area to another. As of the beginning of September, there have been 5,653 confirmed cases in Malawi, with 176 deaths, although with limited testing there is suspected to be thousands more who are positive to COVID-19.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE - NEW BOREHOLES

We at FVM applaud Newton Sindo for his proactive leadership in requesting 4 new boreholes (150 foot deep wells) which have been completed (see previous reports). As a result of the reduction in travel due to Covid, food security is a major issue with 2.6 million Malawians in need of assistance. These pictures show the immense benefit to the local communities with whom we partner in Malawi.

HELLO....My name is Dyna Chikwanje and the child besides me is Gracious Mpembeza. I am one of the education assistance beneficiaries. FVM-C paid tuition fees for in the years 2009 to 2012. Now I am a qualified Primary School Teacher. I got married 4 years ago to Austin Mpembeza, also a teacher. We are blessed with a baby boy, Gracious.  I and my family are so grateful to FVM-C and partners (especially Gogo McAfee) for alleviating my life and that of my household.

Again, thank you all.
