Deforestation is one of the major challenges Africa, especially Malawi, is facing due to population growth and lack of energy for food preparation and other needs that require heat energy. Malawi is not industrialised but is hard hit by climate change due to the careless cutting down of vegetation, in addition to being prone to the world’s industries that have polluted the ozone layer. Natural disasters such as floods, droughts and general inadequacy of rains have become part of life. Cholera cases are usually on the rise due to poor hygiene, an effect from floods that displace people and animals.

FVM has always championed reforestation in the areas it is working. Community members have always been encouraged to plant trees and care for them so that the trees provide them with oxygen, be wind breaker of their houses, provide them with firewood for heat energy, provide building materials in form of poles and wood, and in the process reduce or mitigate effects of climate change.
In 2011, FVM provided two boreholes (wells) to Taulo Community that are serving about 1,500 people. Village Headman (community leader) Bulayimu and his subjects have been using the water from their borehole for tree-seedling development and reforestation of their barren community. One hundred percent of all the bricks baked for strong and permanent structures use huge amount of trees apart from the calamity of charcoal burning in a country that has only 12 hours of electricity per day and even that for only 30% of the population. But everything begins with the “beginning”.
