An Update on Flood Destruction in Malawi
Some families have found refuge in the homes of friends and relatives, while others stayed in evacuation centres until early this month. In total, 800 households lost more than 80% of their property including crops and livestock.
Maggie, who lost part of her home in the flood, narrates: "It was raining slowly but continuously. When it reached the second day, I saw the walls of my house wet and started falling down. In the course of escaping, I lost most of my property. Crops were destroyed. Thanks to Future Vision Ministries for providing Likuni Phala, soap and sugar. At the moment, food is the main need as I rebuild my home." |
On average, each family takes 30kg of maize (corn flour) per month which costs MK7,200 ($10 USD). Therefore, $3,776 USD would provide the main food to about 1,880 individuals for the whole month.
